Skapp - Open Source Business Management Platform
Played dual BA and Product Owner roles on Skapp, an open-source business management product that was recognized at NBQSA 2025 & Asia Pacific ICT Awards 2025.
Overview
Skapp is an open-source business management platform built to simplify people operations for organizations of any size. I played the combined role of Business Analyst and Product Owner throughout the product's active development phase owning the roadmap, defining requirements, and working closely with the UX and engineering teams to ship a product that was both usable and technically sound.
The product went on to win Asia Pacific ICT Awards 2025 and received recognition at the NBQSA 2025.
The Context
Skapp was built in a competitive space where most HR tools are either too complex, too expensive, or too rigid for smaller teams. The product needed to be genuinely simple without sacrificing the features that actually matter to HR managers and employees. Getting that balance right required deep user understanding and proper roadmap with prioritization.
What I Did
- Defined and maintained the product roadmap, aligning features with business goals and user needs across development cycles.
- Conducted market research and competitor analysis to understand positioning and identify gaps the product could fill.
- Gathered and documented requirements through stakeholder interviews, user research sessions, and analysis of competing products.
- Wrote user stories, acceptance criteria, and process flows for all major features — leave management, role-based access, approval workflows, and reporting.
- Collaborated with the UX team on wireframes and prototypes, participating in usability testing sessions to validate design decisions before development.
- Facilitated Agile ceremonies and kept the team aligned across a cross-functional environment with designers, engineers, and QA.
- Used Jira and GitHub Projects for sprint tracking, backlog grooming, and release planning.

Outcome
Skapp shipped successfully and is publicly available now and it also available as an open-source project. The product won Silver at the NBQSA 2025 (National Best Quality Software Awards - National ICT Awards) in Sri Lanka and was recognized at the Asia Pacific ICT Awards 2025 indicating the excellent product quality and the team's efficient execution.
